Should Fantastic Furniture hit the ASX boards as planned, small cap fund managers would go into the IPO marketing process with a pretty good understanding of the business.
While Fantastic's brand is well known among the general public, small cap investors followed the company closely during its 15-plus year stint on the ASX boards.
That listed run only ended in December 2016, when Steinhoff International acquired the business for about $350 million on an enterprise value basis.
Since then, Fantastic has been wrapped up in Steinhoff, which has undergone radical restructuring locally. Steinhoff Asia Pacific was separated from its parent, Steinhoff International, and rebadged Greenlit Brands.
Greenlit is the combination of Steinhoff Asia Pacific and Fantastic Furniture and includes furniture retailers Fantastic, Plush and Freedom and bed sellers Snooze and Original Mattress Factory.
Greenlit reported $49.6 million underlying earnings in the year to September 30, according to accounts filed with ASIC, on $1.02 billion revenue. It reported a $288 million loss, after booking large restructuring costs and writedowns.
Bankers – and investors, should it push ahead with the listing plans – are expected to compare it to Nick Scali, which is well understood by small cap fund managers.
Nick Scali shares are trading at 8.4 times trailing EBITDA and 11.6 times expected EBITDA, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data.
A tumultuous few years
The float deliberations come after a tumultuous few years for Greenlit, which was separated from the debt and accounting scandal-riddled Steinhoff International.
The business was first separated from its parent under the name Steinhoff Asia Pacific Group Holdings, before rebadging the holding company Greenlit Brands. Greenlit now has about 300 stores, 3800 employees in Australia and New Zealand and eight manufacturing sites, according to the company's website.
Greenlit has considered sale and/or float options in the past few years. However, its decision to send a request for proposal to investment banks for Fantastic suggests it is finally serious about pursuing a listing.
Interestingly, the company spent $86 million to acquire a bunch of trademarks from Steinhoff International last financial year, which gave it unfettered ownership and use of its brands.

Furniture sales are at an all-time demand, and furniture stores believe it's because people are spending so much time at home during COVID-19.
"The furniture industry in itself is seeing a lot of demand right now. People are out there looking to replace stuff because they're spending so much time in their homes," Furniture and Appliance Mart vice president of marketing Jon Gadbois said.
"People have been transferred to working from home, so we see people transitioning rooms into their homes into office space," Nigbur's Fine Furniture general manager Linda Nigbur added.
The pandemic that has been keeping people inside their homes is also disrupting furniture orders.
"You had a bunch of manufacturing facilities that were impacted by this that were operating at maybe 30-40% of their capacity. Right now we're seeing that come to fruition when it comes to retail," Gadbois explained.
It's uncertain if that longer wait time trend will continue. Store owners are saying that it makeS more sense to buy sooner.
"There are manufacturers, that when we do orders, it takes 10-12 weeks normally. It certainly is a good time to start," Nigbur stated.
"If you wait the demand continues to go up and the product that's on the water right now is being reserved. If we have to wait for the next round of product to get to us then that could be substantially longer. So right now, really, is that right time to get it," Gadbois added.

COVID-19: Should I change my clothes when I get home from work
ABERDEEN, S.D. — Following a fire that burned Aberdeen, S.D.-based Malchow's Home Furnishings' location to the ground last October, Montgomery's, a furniture retailer also based in South Dakota, has announced its purchase of the longtime South Dakota retailer and plans to bring members of Malchow's leadership into its leadership team. Combined, the two retailers bring over 200 years of furniture selling experience to the table.
"Discussion of joining Montgomery's started after the devastating fire that burned Malchow's to the ground in October 2019," said Mark Malchow, half of the third-generation father/son team behind Malchow's. "We knew from the moment we started talking with Clark and Eric that Montgomery's shared our business philosophies on how to take care of customers and employees, and what it means to be a long-time family- owned business in this state.
The fire that wreaked havoc on Malchow's former location started out of one of the 17 apartments that previously sat atop the store's showroom. It destroyed Malchow's showroom, all of the apartments attached to it and caused several nearby businesses to close temporarily because of smoke and water damage. A month after the fire, state investigators determined that the fire was started by a homemade lighted vanity mirror, according to Aberdeen News.
To replace Malchow's former location, a fourth Montgomery's location will be built in Aberdeen later this year, nearly doubling the space provided by the former Office Max store the retailer has been operating out of. The new store will offer home furnishings, flooring, lighting, window treatments, mattresses and complimentary design services, and will serve all of Malchow's previous customer. An estimated seven to 10 new employees will be hired as construction nears completion on the new space later this year.
"Both companies have not only survived but thrived through droughts, recessions, wars and multiple pandemics," said Eric Sinclair, fifth generation owner of Montgomery's. "We see the future as bright."
A large-scale retirement sale for Tom Malchow, Mark's father, will begin in mid-August on site at the store's current showroom. Mark, Tom and the Malchow's team will run the sale through the fall prior to completion of construction and opening of the new Montgomery's store. Mark will move into a managing partner role with Montgomery's beginning in 2021.
"The retirement sale will offer amazing values as a way to acknowledge my dad for all he has done to build this business and to thank the Aberdeen community for their ongoing and continued support," explained Malchow.

A famous painting of the Immaculate Conception by baroque artist Bartolome Esteban Murillo has become the newest in a long line of botched art restorations in Spain.
Murillo's painting was reportedly cleaned by a furniture collector for 1,200 euros, according to The Guardian. But despite two efforts to restore the work to its original state, the face of the Virgin Mary is now unrecognisable - causing outrage in the Spanish art conservation community and beyond.
"I don't think this guy - or these people - should be referred to as restorers," Fernando Carrera, former president of Spain's Professional Association of Restorers and Conservators told the Guardian.
"Let's be honest: They're bodgers who botch things up. They destroy things."
Get the latest news and updates emailed straight to your inbox.
On social media, the Murillo repair was inevitably compared to other disappointing art restorations from recent years -- such as 2012 work on Ecce Homo fresco of Jesus Christ dubbed "Monkey Jesus," or work on a 16th-century wooden Saint George statue, which in 2018 was described as resembling a cartoon character.
The continuing history of failed repairs like these has led experts to stress the importance of training and increased regulations surrounding art restoration.
"We cannot tolerate more attacks on our cultural heritage," ACRE said in a statement after the St. George restoration attempt. "It shows a frightening lack of training of the kind required for this sort of job."
Europa Press, which first broke the news of the Murillo restoration, spoke to Maria Borja, vice president of Internal Relations and coordinator of ACRE.
"The Heritage Law itself does not specifically oblige or recommend that the interventions be carried out by professionals trained in conservation-restoration," Borja told Europa Press. "This lack of legislation leads to disastrous interventions that occasionally come to us, especially alarming when it comes to Romanesque carvings or Renaissance images of great value."

The pro tips to keep patio furniture looking new all winter long
A 53-year-old man used his job to access information about a Blackwood woman and then used it to harass her by phone for about three weeks, authorities said.
Shortly after the woman hired a Philadelphia company to assist her in a furniture donation in May, a man began calling her and making offensive and inappropriate comments, Gloucester Township police said in a statement last week.
George Tobin, of Somerdale, was arrested following an investigation and charged with stalking and harassment, police said. Tobin, who worked for a Philadelphia furniture company, was already on parole, officials said. He was sent to the Camden County jail.
The name of the company was not disclosed.
Anyone who was a victim of similar harassment is asked to call Gloucester Township police at 856-228-4500 or the department's anonymous crime tip line at 856-842-5560. Tips can also be emailed to Police@GTPolice.com.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Jeremy Hoff will succeed Paul Toms as CEO of Hooker Furniture Corp. effective Jan. 31 upon Toms' planned retirement. Toms will continue as chairman of the full-line furniture importer and manufacturer.
Hoff, who joined Hooker Furniture in 2017 and currently serves as president of Hooker Legacy Brands, will become only the fourth CEO in the 96-year history of the company, and the first non-family member at the helm.
Toms, 66, is a grandson of Clyde Hooker Sr., who founded the Hooker Furniture in 1924, and has served as CEO since 2000 after joining the company in 1983 and serving in various management roles. He succeeded his uncle, Clyde Hooker Jr., who led the company from 1960 to 2000.
"In the time Jeremy has been at Hooker, he has proven to be a great leader," said Toms. "His knowledge of case goods and upholstery is deep. Jeremy is both a strategic and operationally-focused executive who can balance growing sales with being profitable. His interpersonal relationships are exceptional, and he is highly regarded by co-workers, sales reps, customers and suppliers alike. The way he relates to people and seeks their input and respects all, reminds me of Clyde Hooker Jr. Importantly, I know he values the culture that has driven so much of our success. I'm confident Jeremy and the entire leadership team will take Hooker Furniture, and all of its operating divisions, to the next level."
Hoff came to Hooker Furniture in August 2017 as president of Hooker upholstery. In May 2018, he was appointed president of both case goods and upholstery. Earlier this year, Hoff assumed his present role as president of the company's legacy brands, including Bradington-Young, Sam Moore and Shenandoah as well as Hooker.
Prior to joining Hooker, Hoff had served as president of Theodore Alexander Furniture since 2015 and before that was senior vice president of sales at A.R.T. Furniture. He also has served as a regional sales manager for Broyhill and as a manufacturer's rep for Universal, Craftmaster, Pulaski and King Hickory. Hoff began his furniture industry career with Austin, Texas-based retailer Louis Shanks, and he then served several years as a wholesale furniture sales rep.
A legacy of growth
Upon retirement, Toms will leave a legacy of growth in terms of revenue, product categories, acquisitions and channel development.
When Toms joined Hooker Furniture in 1983, the company was a mid-sized niche case goods manufacturer with approximately $50 million in annual sales. In 2000, the year he took over leadership of the company, revenue totaled $251 million. In its most recent fiscal year ended Feb. 2, Hooker Furniture posted net sales of $610.8 million and net income of $17.1 million.
In addition to organic growth under Toms' leadership, the company entered domestic upholstery manufacturing through such acquisitions as Bradington-Young, Sam Moore Furniture and Shenandoah.
Hooker Furniture made its largest acquisition in February 2016 when it closed on the purchase of multi-division sourcing major Home Meridian International, which extended an already powerful sourcing infrastructure and opened up a new retailer base and further drove Hooker's existing expansion into the online channel.
Those achievements, which made Hooker Furniture one of the country's top five U.S. furniture resources and gained listing on NASDAQ Global Select, led to Toms' induction into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame in 2018.
"I'm grateful and humbled to be selected to lead a company with such a rich heritage and culture," said Hoff, 46. "I feel a major responsibility to carry on the legacy of Clyde Hooker, Clyde Hooker Jr. and Paul Toms, who has been an amazing mentor to me. The fact that the company has had only three CEOs, and I get to be the fourth, is a great honor."
Going forward, Hoff said his vision is to "keep our culture thriving and ensure we continue to position the company strategically in a changing market, focusing on advantaged channels, innovative products and keeping our value equation robust for all stakeholders."

Furniture scratching. Many cat owners have experienced it. Coming home from work or waking up in the morning only to find the living room sofa, carpet, or armchair now sporting holes, tears, or rips. And, of course, there is only one culprit who could have committed such a crime: the mischievousness cat.
But why does your kitty scratch the furniture? And how can you protect your beautiful furniture from your sassy furball? POPSUGAR turned to the experts to help us understand more about this common feline behavior and ways to stop your cat from turning your furniture into mere shreds.
Related: How to Get Your Cat to Stop Treating Your Feet Like a Chew Toy, According to Experts
Why Does My Cat Scratch the Furniture?
Cats scratch because it's in their nature, said Jackson Galaxy, cat behavior and wellness expert, host of Animal Planet's My Cat From Hell, and New York Times bestselling author. "By scratching, they are producing both a visual mark on their territory, as well as a scent marker, as they have scent glands in between all of their pads," he said. "Every time they scratch, they're leaving a scent, and because cats are very territorial, they need to do this." Scratching also helps cats exercise the muscles in their chest and arms and remove any dead sheaths of nail that have built up, Galaxy said.
How Do I Stop My Cat From Scratching the Furniture?
"Having multiple scratching posts throughout your home increases the chance that your cats will use them instead of furniture," said Mikel Delgado, a certified applied animal behaviorist, a postdoctoral veterinary fellow, and Smalls' resident cat expert. She further explained that because every cat has a distinct preference for the texture, sturdiness, size, and angle of scratching posts, it's important to have adequate scratching options that suit your cat's needs. For example, many cats love vertical scratching on tall, sturdy sisal posts, while some enjoy horizontal scratching on a cardboard pad or lounger. If your cat prefers vertical stretchers, it's important to make sure they are tall enough that your cat can stand on their hind legs and get a full stretch, she said. The location of the scratching posts is also very important. Dr. Delgado suggests positioning them in high-traffic areas in your home where your cat sleeps, eats, and plays as well as near any of the furniture your cat scratches. If your cat responds to enrichment, you can use catnip, toys, or treats to motivate your furball to investigate the scratching post, but you should never force the issue, Dr. Delgado said. "What you don't want to do is carry your cat over to the scratching post and move their paws on it," she said, explaining that instead, to encourage appropriate scratching, you should give your cat lots of praise and treats whenever they use the scratching post.
Another way to prevent your cat from scratching on furniture is using Feliscratch by Feliway, said Michelle Burch, DVM, veterinary writer and adviser at Catological. "Feliscratch is a product that has been created to help train your cat to scratch on the appropriate post," she said. "This product replicates feline territorial messages to encourage cats to put their scent on the scratching material." In clinical studies, within the first week of use, Feliscratch helped 85 percent of cats exhibiting destructive scratching to reduce or stop their destructive scratching and 79.7 percent of cats exhibiting unwanted scratching to start using scratching posts.
Discouragement tactics can also help solve inappropriate scratching, Dr. Burch said. One option is placing a piece of aluminum foil on the area in question. "With the foil being slick and shiny, they cannot leave an appropriate scent or groom their nails," she said. Another option is applying plastic tips like Soft Paws to your cat's nails. "Application of the plastic tips will allow your cat to place their scent and stretch on what they perceive is their territory," Dr. Burch said. Ranging from clear to a variety of colors and designs, the plastic tips tend to stay in place for six to eight weeks. They can be glued in place at home, or many veterinary hospitals can apply them for you. One last option is using a double-sided tape product like Sticky Paws. "Cats do not like having sticky substances on their paws, and this will help discourage that inappropriate scratching," she said. The transparent adhesive strips can be applied directly to furniture and other household items. They are unlikely to harm most furniture and won't leave a sticky residue when removed. "Once these products have done their job of discouragement and you have retrained your cat to scratch in an appropriate location, you can remove the distractors," Dr. Burch said.
Story continues
If all else fails, Dr. Burch suggests using loud noise or spray bottles to prevent your cat from scratching the furniture. However, such methods should be used as a last resort since they're considered negative reinforcement. "Negative reinforcement can, at times, backfire and result in cats scratching more on furniture," she said. "In some cases, it does help prevent the destruction of your furniture."
Will Trimming My Cat's Nails Curb the Clawing Habit?
"Nail trims are good for your cat's health, but they don't take away your cat's need to scratch!" Dr. Delgado said. That's why it's so important to have a few good scratching options. That said, trimming your cat's nails can be helpful in reducing any damage done during scratching and preventing your cat's claws from getting stuck in everything, she said. If you decide to trim your cat's nails, Dr. Delgado suggests using treats to help your cat accept nail trims, going slowly, and reaching out to your vet if you have any questions or concerns.
Should I Have My Cat Declawed to Prevent Destructive Scratching?
Many experts do not recommend declawing your cat as it can lead to medical and behavioral problems. "Long-term medical problems include lameness, constant pain, and rarely chronic self-mutilation of the surgical region," Dr. Burch said. She further explained that 33 percent of declawed cats develop long-term behavioral problems, including increased aggression and urinating or defecating outside the litter box.

Celebrations may be in order for Hooker Furniture Corporation (NASDAQ:HOFT) shareholders, with the covering analyst delivering a significant upgrade to their statutory estimates for the company. The analyst greatly increased their revenue estimates, suggesting a stark improvement in business fundamentals.
Following the latest upgrade, Hooker Furniture's one analyst currently expects revenues in 2021 to be US$577m, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to swell 14% to US$1.35. Previously, the analyst had been modelling revenues of US$474m and earnings per share (EPS) of US$1.03 in 2021. There has definitely been an improvement in perception recently, with the analyst substantially increasing both their earnings and revenue estimates.
Check out our latest analysis for Hooker Furniture
With these upgrades, we're not surprised to see that the analyst has lifted their price target 24% to US$26.00 per share.
Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast revenue decline of 0.6%, a significant reduction from annual growth of 17% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 2.7% next year. It's pretty clear that Hooker Furniture's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away from this upgrade is that the analyst upgraded their earnings per share estimates for this year, expecting improving business conditions. Pleasantly, the analyst also upgraded their revenue estimates, and their forecasts suggest the business is expected to grow slower than the wider market. Given that the consensus looks almost universally bullish, with a substantial increase to forecasts and a higher price target, Hooker Furniture could be worth investigating further.
With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. At least one analyst has provided forecasts out to 2022, which can be seen for free on our platform here.
Of course, seeing company management invest large sums of money in a stock can be just as useful as knowing whether analysts are upgrading their estimates. So you may also wish to search this free list of stocks that insiders are buying.

'On The Michigan Road' throwback: Kindel Furniture in Grand Rapids
A furniture store in Dunwoody received some unwanted — and forceful — interior design changes after a vehicle crashed into its gallery space.
The La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries store off Olde Perimeter Parkway will need some major redecorating after the sedan's driver accidentally drove into the building, police said Wednesday.
No one was injured during the incident, which happened just before noon. Police said the driver accidentally stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brakes, so no charges will be filed.
The car fully entered the store, shattering a full set of windows, according to photos provided by the department.

Exploding sperm whale Carcass caught on camera in The Faroe Islands!
When the Massachusetts economy shifted into second gear this week, the drill was a familiar one at the Bob's Discount Furniture chain, which for the past month has been reopening stores state by state.
While some retailers may be slowly welcoming back customers ― or even holding off for now ― the doors at all 11 Bob's locations in Massachusetts swung open Monday, allowing people to once again to sit on a sofa or lie on a mattress. Over the next two weeks, Bob's expects its entire 128-store chain across 20 states to open, with New York City and New Jersey locations being among the last to return.
Perhaps the most surprising part of the reopening effort has been the number of people who are ready to return to stores — not only to shop, but to actually buy.
"It has been pretty terrific pretty much across the board," said Bob's chief executive, Mike Skirvin. "What we don't know is how long that will last . . . There is certainly pent-up demand."
Skirvin knows it's premature to say whether consumers' spending will return to pre-pandemic levels with the unemployment rate in the double digits and the economy mired in recession. There will be some amount of shopping, but Skirvin doesn't know quite what to expect, given the unprecedented times. Customers who are out and about in the first wave could also be a self-selected group: They're not browsers; they need to buy stuff, whether it's a bed or a bureau, or maybe a desk for a work-from-home setup.
For Bob's, the reopenings have been an exercise in making sure customers and employees feel safe.
The moment a customer steps into a Bob's it's hard not to notice how much shopping has changed because of the pandemic. Stationed at the entrance is a masked employee in a newly created role of greeter, armed with an infrared thermometer and questions.
"Can I put some sanitizer on your hands?"
"Can I take your temperature?"
"How are you feeling today?"
"Have you been around anyone sick today?"
If a customer isn't wearing a mask, Bob's will provide one.
At the Nashua, N.H., store June 2, there was another unusual sight: a line outside the spacious furniture store, as if it were a sales-tax holiday.
A place like Bob's should be one of the easiest places to social distance, but executives made a decision early on to sharply restrict the total number of people in stores — a policy that often goes beyond local regulations.
Across the chain, Bob's is reopening by allowing only 10 customer parties at a time in each store. At the Nashua store, for example, the fire code allows 766 people at a time, but under New Hampshire's reopening regulations, capacity is restricted to 50 percent. Bob's, however, is letting in only about 70 customers at a time at this location, a fraction of what the state allows.
In Massachusetts, retailers like Bob's are limited to 40 percent capacity; still, the chain's policy remains more restrictive.
"There are a lot of rules out there, and they continue to change," said Roger Dunlap, senior vice president of store operations. "We established Bob's rules."
Among other rules are the chain's new "ABCs." Instead of "Always be closing," employees are told to be "Always be cleaning."
Before each reopening, the store is deep-cleaned. Employees are also cleaning throughout the day, wiping surfaces touched by customers.
Bob's has stopped giving out free coffee and food (meaning no cookies or candy) because many states are prohibiting communal eating in order to control the virus.
Yes, customers can still plunk down on a sofa, test out a recliner, or rest on a mattress. Bob's is giving shoppers the option of using a disposable paper liner before they lie on a bed — similar to what you might see in a doctor's office.
"People are touching things less," observed Chuck James, Bob's zone president who oversees New England. "But if they are going to buy a sofa, they will sit on it."
At the Nashua store, just over the Massachusetts border, Auntaya and Edgar Rosario of Lowell were looking for a mattress. With masks on, they tested out the Twilight Bob-o-pedic. Another Massachusetts couple, Jim and Faith Mickel of Shirley, brought their own tape measure to size up a sofa.
The Mickels mirror a trend among Bob's post-shutdown shoppers: They've been eager to upgrade their living rooms, scooping up sofas, sectionals, and recliners.
Faith Mickel said she felt comfortable shopping, calling Bob's virus-prevention procedures thorough.
For those who aren't comfortable shopping during regular hours, customers can now come in by appointment, either before a store opens or after it closes.
Bob's shuttered its first stores on March 21, when Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf ordered nonessential businesses closed.
Looking back, Bob's CEO Skirvin said, "The psychological closing of the stores — and not knowing when they would reopen — that was difficult."
Even without a reopening date on the horizon, there was still a lot of work to be done. Or as Dunlap, Bob's store operations executive, put it, the chain still had to "maintain the engine."
Bob's furloughed many of its 5,700 employees but kept some store managers and supply chain staff on the payroll. Distribution centers never closed, and deliveries to online shoppers continued. Bob's also introduced a new option for customers wary about having delivery people in their homes: no-contact drop-offs of furniture outside your house.
The chain figured that any new virus regulation would be likely to involve masks, wipes, and sanitizer, so it needed to buy those products right away. Bob's — known for its cheeky commercials — is headquartered in Manchester, Conn., and majority-owned by the Boston private equity firm Bain Capital.
Throughout the shutdown, managers remained in weekly contact with furloughed employees. As reopening dates became known and neared, managers gauged whether employees wanted to return to work. Since Bob's is operating with reduced capacity and hours, the chain wouldn't need everyone back right away.
The first store reopened May 5 in St. Peters, Mo., followed a few days later by one in Warwick, R.I., and two in Nevada.
Last week, managers in Massachusetts began calling employees to determine whether they were ready to return as soon as Monday, when more retailers could open their doors. Training on the new COVID-19 procedures took place Monday morning before stores opened at 11 a.m. In addition to wearing masks, employees have their temperatures checked before they begin their shifts.
Chain-wide, about half of the furloughed employees have returned.
Most workers, said James, the zone president, were eager to get back.
"People are excited," James said. "It's the sense of normalcy."

Dave Lewis of Windsor wasn't around in the 1930s to plop down before a hefty, handsomely crafted Philco or Silvertone and tune in to "The Lone Ranger" or "Tarzan" or "Dick Tracy."
But at nearly 77 the restlessly industrious retired firefighter is old enough to remember when a radio was a radio.
From the 1920s until it was bettered by the television, a household's radio was its electronic entertainment and news source, its audible link to the world.
The family radio "took a place of honor" in a home, Lewis said in the tidy garage where he repairs and restores old radios. For generations, he notes, shopping for a radio was little different than searching for the perfect sofa or dining table.
"It was a piece of your furniture," Lewis said. "It was a piece of your home, so you wanted one that fit with your room decor."
The burgeoning popularity of televisions 60 and 70 years ago caused radios to be left off at night, and perhaps moved from a revered spot in the living room to the kitchen counter.
It was forecast that radios would in time be relegated to barns and sheds wherein the likes of buggies, gas lamps and butter churns gathered dust.
...
THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. Though diminished in stature by television, radio broadcasting survived TV and then every form of recorded music and podcasts and satellite radio. Nielsen Media Research reports that each week radio reaches 92% of American adults — 5% more than watch TV.
But today most of us listen to broadcasts in the car or tune in online or on a plastic, digital, throw-it-away-if-it-breaks radio.
Those aren't what turns Dave Lewis on.
...
WHEN HE BEGAN to take notice of old radios at a flea market a year and a half ago, Lewis was in the market for a new pastime.
The retired Oakland Fire battalion chief had earlier built one of the sweetest, cleverest scale-railroad towns on Earth.
It was a 3D model of his life with his wife, Suzan, and their two daughters. HO-scale trains rolled past precise miniatures of each of the homes the family had lived in, and the historic Oakland firehouse where Dave and Suzan met, and on and on.
The train layout had occupied the dining table for long enough when Dave Lewis gave it away early last year.
Needing a new avocation, he took up with vintage tabletop radios that once were integral to American home life but now, if they exist at all, are likely to be forgotten and forlorn and inoperable for as long as their keepers can remember.
...
"LOOK AT THAT. That's solid wood," Lewis said of a 1946 Gilfallan Bros of Los Angeles radio. "There are tables made less sturdy than that, and it's a radio!"
He's savoring the challenge of finding such radios, researching them, determining what parts they need and going in search of them. If he restores one and a relative or friend or friend of a friend admires it, he offers it as a gift from past.
Nineteen times so far, Lewis has reassembled and polished up an Emerson or GE or RCA Victor, Arvin, Crosley or Schaub-Lorenz. Then he plugs it in, turns it on. And waits.
When a voice or tune swells on, he channels the glee of a kid who discovered the wonders of the airwaves long before ever hearing or uttering "TV."

TOKYO -- Furniture prices in Japan have been on the rise recently, with industry watchers pointing to the growing popularity of domestically made whisky and its aging casks as contributing to a shortage of timber.
Karimoku Furniture has hiked prices about 10% on almost all its products, starting with deliveries made last summer. Sharply higher costs for raw materials and shipping prompted the move.
"We raised prices, unable to absorb the rising cost of white oak and other raw materials for furniture," a procurement manager said.
Fellow Japanese furniture maker Conde House raised prices on certain wood tables and chairs in 2019. The Runt Om chair went up 5% to 53,000 yen ($486).
Furniture makers have faced recent competition from whisky and wine makers in procuring wood, the speculation goes.
White oak, favored for its strength and durability, is the material of choice for making whisky barrels. The barrels are fabricated from straight-grain lumber, which can come only trees with straight annual rings.
Japanese whisky has won fans across the world. It is quickly gaining ground at home as well, thanks to the rising popularity of highballs and an acclaimed TV show several years ago based on the life of Nikka Whisky Distilling founder Masataka Taketsuru. Japanese producers have responded by boosting whisky production, driving up demand for aging barrels.
Wood desks and tables averaged 37,713 yen in 2019, according to government data, up 10% from five years prior. Chairs climbed 10% to 36,280 yen.
Furniture makers prefer wood from broadleaf trees because of their hardness and material quality. Apart from white oak, teak, walnut and Japanese beech have been go-to varieties.
White oak and walnut in particular have reportedly taken on larger profiles at the Milan furniture fair, one of the largest of its kind. "In recent years, furniture using white oak and walnut make up about 30% of the products on display," said Kiyoshi Sadogawa, president of Zero First Design in Tokyo.
The two wood types are said to be popular in China and Japan as well as in the West. That has caused import costs for timber to surge. The wholesale price of imported white oak, produced mostly in the U.S., hovers at around 180,000 yen per cu. meter.
"Prices have steadily increased from five to six years ago, and recently they have remained higher," said a sales manager at Hokkaido sawmill Shingu Shoko.
The pattern could be seen for walnut too. FAS walnut, the highest grade, are being traded domestically at prices 50% to 100% higher than white oak.
"It's up 50% from a decade ago," said a source at Saito Wood Industry. Walnut has always been a scarce variety whose production is concentrated in the U.S. The recent attention has tightened supplies further.
Furniture maker Hida Sangyo, which imports 90% of its wood, raised product prices 5% to 10% in 2019. "As a factor in the price adjustments, the upswing in the broadleaf wood market is not insignificant," a manager said.
The costlier imported lumber has pushed up prices of domestically produced wood as well. A cubic meter of homegrown oak now fetches around 195,000 yen, according to an industry survey by Hokkaido Prefecture -- up 8% from five years earlier.
With the coronavirus slowing economic activity worldwide, demand for furniture is expected to decrease for the time being in Japan and the rest of the world. This could shift the greater market for hardwood, forcing industry insiders to closely watch new developments.
