Robert Downey Jr. Took His Furniture With Him to Film ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Robert Downey Jr. is best known for his performance as billionaire inventor Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He played the character in 2008's Iron Man, the first installment in what would become one of the most popular (and profitable) movie franchises ever. The actor bid farewell to the role when Avengers: Endgame hit theaters in 2019.

He walked away with a $75 million paycheck but fans still wonder if Downey Jr. will ever return to the MCU. While Marvel Studios continues to make superhero movies, we're taking a look back at the 55-year-old actor's time in the MCU. Specifically, the period Downey Jr. spent filming Captain America: Civil War.

'Captain America: Civil War' premiered in 2016

Captain America actor Chris Evans and Downey Jr. teamed up in Captain America: Civil War. While the actors are good friends in real life, their characters go head-to-head in the movie. Hitting theaters in May 2016, Captain America: Civil War continued the saga of the Avengers and brought together superheroes from across the MCU.

Today, fans don't think it's that good compared to the rest of the Captain America movies in the franchise. Despite the lukewarm reception, there's no denying it's still entertaining.

Robert Downey Jr. shipped furniture to 'Captain America: Civil War' filming location

During the making of the superhero movie, the cast filmed on location in Georgia. As people who spend a lot of time away from home on movie sets, the actors have to get creative with their rented digs. Downey Jr. got really creative. When it came time to travel to Georgia, the father of three had all the furniture from his California home shipped to his temporary place.

Downey Jr. talked about it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! during a 2015 appearance with Evans.

"Lest I be thought of as some self-involved, snarky, 'he's got it all' thing: You know, you're away from home for a long time. And so, we thought … we bring the cats and the kids and … As a matter of fact, let's bring the house," he said.

Downey Jr., his wife Susan, and their two kids Avri and Exton made themselves at home in Georgia bringing the comforts of home with them. It worked out so well for the family it's now a regular thing when the actor has to film on location.

"Whenever he rents a place, he has all the same furniture sent so there's consistency from rental to rental," a source told Us Weekly in May 2015. "He does it for a sense of comfort."

Maybe a little extravagant, Downey Jr. might be on to something. His family's right at home when they come to his rented pad. Plus, he's got the money to cover the moving costs. The actor's net worth is estimated to be around $300 million. And his mansion in Malibu, California, with ocean views and a pool must be a hard place to leave.

One thing's for sure; we'll never think twice again about traveling with a pillow from home ever again!

Outdoor Furniture Is Awful. Picnic Tables Are Great.

I'm sitting at my picnic table as I write this. To my back is the kitchen window. I can hear my daughter's lilting voice, but I can't quite make out the words. I hear my wife too. She's laughing. As far as distractions go, it could be far worse. And I'm feeling chill anyway. I'm working outside and that makes all the difference.

Very specifically, the thing making the difference is my picnic table, the most zen piece of furniture I've ever owned.

Having a picnic table in the small side yard right next to my driveway has changed my life. My house is small, with a footprint of just over 700 square feet. It has two bedrooms, one for my daughter and another for me and my wife. My "office" is in the basement, but I come up for air and grumble when there are interruptions, which has created some conflict during the pandemic. Nobody is happy with this work from home arrangement and it gets really weird when I start asking my daughter's stuffed animals to go out and grab me a latte. Enter the picnic table. Now I can treat my driveway like an office or work in the yard.

  • How much has your family spending changed amid Covid-19?

    We're spending much less

    We're spending much more

    We're spending about the same

  • Thanks for the feedback!

I'm wildly grateful for that freedom.

In my experience, the biggest problem with outdoor furniture is that it's terrible. Outdoor tables wobble and deck chairs either splinter or blow over in the wind. The surfaces are too small or the height is bizarre or the cost is prohibitive. If you're about to make a case for a better piece of outdoor furniture, that's fine. You spend your money. But, let me ask you this. When is the last time you went to a bar or a restaurant with outdoor seating and you were disappointed with a picnic table?

Now, to be clear, I'm not talking about metal or plastic or rubber picnic tables, here. I'm talking about wooden ones. The heavy kind that's really hard to lift and move. Something that you might find at a campground. I know the wood on this sucker will rot in the rain after a long time, but you know what? Wood is shockingly easy to replace. We obtained our picnic table used, and, as such, had to replace a few rotten panels. This wasn't as hard as I thought. Granted, my brother-in-law insisted on helping me (read: doing all of it) and I mostly watched him while standing six-feet-away sipping a beer, but it wasn't a struggle by any means. I liked that beer and I'm reasonably sure I could have gotten it done without the assist.

Picnic tables are also just nice. When she's done in her playhouse, my daughter can easily sit down on this thing and have a snack. As a family, we can decide at the last minute to have dinner outside on it. In the evenings, when my daughter is asleep, my wife and I can have a glass of wine and share a bench. And, guess what we can do on a picnic table, that we can't do on deck chairs? Look at each other. It's a bit kinky, but I'm not ashamed.

A picnic table makes a part of your house feel like you've gone somewhere else. And, at the point at which we're not sure when any of us will safely be able to eat outside at a cool brewery or have a date at a nice wine bar, having your own version of that is the next best thing. Actually, it might be better.

Federal judge clears way for Robert Levin to reacquire furniture stores in Ohio Pennsylvania

The $25.7 million dollar deal includes $10 million to compensate customers who paid deposits on orders that were never fulfilled.

DELAWARE, USA — A federal judge has cleared the way for the former owner of Levin Furniture to buy back the company and its assets, including several stores in Northeast Ohio.

On Wednesday, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Sontchi approved Robert Levin's plan to revitalize his family's furniture brand. According to NBC affiliate WPIX in Pittsburgh, Levin announced last week that he reached a $25.7 million deal to buy back Levin Furniture out of bankruptcy months after a previous deal to save his company fell through.

In March, Levin announced that he was coming out of retirement to acquire the Ohio and Pennsylvania assets of Levin Furniture and Wolf Furniture through a court restructuring of the parent company Art Van Furniture, LLC. However, that deal fell apart when Art Van Furniture -- citing the COVID-19 pandemic -- closed its doors and terminated all employees across the entire company.

"I'm coming back as the owner of Levin Furniture for the employees who were at risk of losing their jobs," Levin said in the March statement announcing his return. "They are the most loyal, dedicated, and hardworking people I've ever known. It will be a privilege and honor to once again lead this company as we prepare to celebrate 100 years in the furniture and mattress business."

Court records show the approved bid includes a $10 million fund that will be set aside to compensate more than 1,000 customers in Ohio and Pennsylvania who paid for or made deposits on furniture that Art Van's owners never delivered.

Information will be posted on the company's website about how customers can get restitution. Details on which locations will be reopening and the timing will be announced at a later date.

Levin Furniture was founded in 1920 in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania by Robert Levin's grandparents. It has several Northeast Ohio locations, including Avon, Akron, North Olmsted, Mentor, Middleburg Heights, and North Canton.

The company will celebrate its 100th anniversary later this year.

Furniture retailers tell customers it's OK to touch sit lie down because they have coronavirus precautions in place

Raleigh, N.C. — Memorial Day is traditionally a big day for retail shopping, but as stores only reopened two weeks ago ease pandemic-related restrictions were eased, business remains a bit slow as both retailers and customers continue to adjust to the new rules.

"It's been a little slow over the weekend," said Kim Kyle, who run Steven Shell Furniture in Raleigh's Cameron Village shopping center.

When Steven Shell Furniture reopened about a week and a half ago, Kyle said she was expecting a surge in shoppers.

"People didn't bum rush like we thought, maybe, but the traffic has been slowly picking up," she said.

To help attract shoppers, the store is holding a "Welcome Back" and Memorial Day sale, with 20 percent off the whole store. Kyle said the store also is making its safety protocols known to make customers more comfortable.

"Every morning, we come in an hour early," she said. "We wipe down every piece of furniture, especially paying attention to the handles. We are using Lysol to disinfect."

Hand sanitizer is placed throughout the store, and masks are encouraged.

"We are just trying to do everything we can to keep everyone safe that works here, as well as visits the store," Kyle said.

In-person shopping is critical to furniture stores because customers like to get a feel for the items, she said. Because of that, customers are still allowed to touch pieces and test them out.

"There's a lot of physical touching to pick your right piece," she said.

Shopper Erica Reese, who was out Monday looking for antiques, agreed.

"I've been looking at Etsy and stuff to find different hand-made antiques, but nothing compares to in-person [shopping]," said Reese, who noted that she scouts out stores in advance to make sure they are cleaning properly.

"I just know the days that they are cleaning," she said. "It's clear that there's not that many people out there, which is good, and just knowing how thoughtful they're being about it is really important to me."

At The Original Mattress Factory, Vice President Reed Murphy said they provide customers with "a protective pillow and mattress sham that provides a barrier between them and the mattresses" so people can try out various mattresses.

"All OMF employees will be wearing masks, practicing social distancing and increasing cleaning and disinfecting practices," company President Greg Trzcinski said in a statement. "We will also be limiting the number of customers that are in our stores at one time."

At Ashley Homestore, common areas, door handles, countertops, computers, credit kiosks and other surfaces are being disinfected throughout the day, according to the company website.

Memorial Day weekend is here, which means it's time to light up your grill, pour the rosé and unwind in the great outdoors. While relaxing to the max should top your agenda, we also recommend taking advantage of the major furniture sales in honor of Memorial Day weekend — and many of them are already happening.

So whether it's a couch that's past its prime or a rug that's been trashed by pets and toddlers, if you're looking to invest in new pieces or simply refresh a lackluster space without breaking the bank, this is the time to do so. Check out the best sales from some of our favorite furniture retailers below. And if you're looking for even more sales, we've also rounded up more than 200 of the best deals to shop this weekend.

    Wayfair

Leading furniture retailer Wayfair is always a destination for primo discounts, but its Memorial Day deals are officially some of the best in the business, with everything up to 70% off through May 26.

Bedroom furniture starts at just $99, and the Novogratz Bushwick Platform Bed ($177.66, originally $276.78; wayfair.com) is a crazy cheap way to reinvent your space. We love the metal finial head and footboard, and the fact that the bed has more than 10,000 reviews. Also, since we're all going to be spending more time in our personal outdoor spaces this summer, make sure yours is ready to go with the Kelton 10-Foot Market Umbrella ($88.99, originally $119.99; wayfair.com), which has a tilting mechanism so you can adjust the canopy angle throughout the day. Another outdoor must-have? This Hartington Folding Chair ($207.99, originally $299; wayfair.com). It comes in 50 colors, is made of plastic and folds flat for easy storage.

    Overstock

Now through June 1, Overstock is offering up to 70% off of thousands of items, plus free shipping — no matter the product size. Read: It's time to buy that patio set! Looking for an affordable and reliable mattress? The Lucid Comfort Collection 10-inch SureCool Gel Memory Foam Mattress (starting at $163.99; originally starting at $259.99; overstock.com) has more than 10,000 positive reviews and is majorly on sale right now.

    The Container Store

Get the closet of your dreams for a fraction of the price now through the end of June at The Container Store, where closet essentials like shoe storage and drawer organizers are 25% off. The really exciting deal, however, is that everything Elfa — entire closets even! — is now 30% off. The Elfa Decor 6-Foot Birch and Platinum Closet, for example, is now $1,156.40 versus the regular price of $1,652.

    Burrow

Modular seating brand Burrow has expanded into tables, rugs, pillows and wall shelves, and all of the retailer's offerings are steeply discounted for Memorial Day. Receive 10% off any purchase under $1,499. After that take $200 off orders of $1,500 or more; $250 off orders of $1,800 or more; $300 off orders of $2,200 or more; $400 off orders of $2,600 or more; $500 off orders of $3,000 or more; and $600 off orders of $4,000 and up with code MDW.

Your best bet at Burrow is, first and foremost, the seating. The Block Nomad Loveseat with Ottoman ($1,161, originally $1,290; burrow.com) has nearly 900 positive reviews, reversible cushions, stain-proof fabric and a built-in USB charger, so you can charge your phone without getting up. Small space dwellers will appreciate the Bento Coffee Table ($445.50, originally $495; burrow.com), which features built-in storage and three rearrangeable, removable trays.

We're partial to the Walmsley Gray Area Rug (starting at $36, originally starting at $72; allmodern.com), which has more than 9,000 positive reviews and comes in five neutral hues. If you've been considering scooping up some bar stools for your kitchen counter, the Neil 2-Piece Set ($152, originally $297; allmodern.com) is a solid deal, and it comes in two height options. And if it's your bedroom that needs to be revitalized, look no further than the Harry Upholstered Platform Bed (starting at $196, originally $219.90; allmodern.com), which has a 4.8-star rating and nearly 15,000 reviews, with its sturdy steel construction and sleek tufted headboard.

Birch Lane is offering everything from wall art and lighting to rugs and furniture at up to 70% off this weekend, with an additional 15% discount starting May 20 and running through May 26 with the code SWEET.

Head to the retailer for everything from kitchen appliances and bathroom vanities, to furniture, decor and more, all of which is up to 70% off through the end of the month with promo code MEMORIALDAY.

We love this rust Delacora 48-Inch Wide Desk ($255.20, originally $319; build.com), which includes two built-in outlets, a drawer and open shelving. And since one of the many facets of "adulting" is having a wine fridge, the EdgeStar 30-Inch Wine Cooler ($1,215.05, originally $1,279; build.com) holds 56 bottles and has French doors that are as fancy as they are sleek.

Here's Why Hooker Furniture (NASDAQ:HOFT) Can Manage Its Debt Responsibly

David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital. So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We can see that Hooker Furniture Corporation (NASDAQ:HOFT) does use debt in its business. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

    When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

See our latest analysis for Hooker Furniture

    What Is Hooker Furniture's Debt?

The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Hooker Furniture had debt of US$30.1m at the end of February 2020, a reduction from US$35.5m over a year. But it also has US$36.0m in cash to offset that, meaning it has US$5.92m net cash.

imageHow Strong Is Hooker Furniture's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Hooker Furniture had liabilities of US$50.1m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$69.5m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$36.0m in cash and US$88.4m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it can boast US$4.85m more liquid assets than total liabilities.

This short term liquidity is a sign that Hooker Furniture could probably pay off its debt with ease, as its balance sheet is far from stretched. Simply put, the fact that Hooker Furniture has more cash than debt is arguably a good indication that it can manage its debt safely.

It is just as well that Hooker Furniture's load is not too heavy, because its EBIT was down 58% over the last year. When a company sees its earnings tank, it can sometimes find its relationships with its lenders turn sour. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Hooker Furniture can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. While Hooker Furniture has net cash on its balance sheet, it's still worth taking a look at its ability to convert earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, to help us understand how quickly it is building (or eroding) that cash balance. Over the most recent three years, Hooker Furniture recorded free cash flow worth 55% of its EBIT, which is around normal, given free cash flow excludes interest and tax. This free cash flow puts the company in a good position to pay down debt, when appropriate.

    Summing up

While it is always sensible to investigate a company's debt, in this case Hooker Furniture has US$5.92m in net cash and a decent-looking balance sheet. So we don't have any problem with Hooker Furniture's use of debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Hooker Furniture you should be aware of.

    Story continues

At the end of the day, it's often better to focus on companies that are free from net debt. You can access our special list of such companies (all with a track record of profit growth). It's free.

Coronavirus home furniture buying tips to keep you safe

Americans are spending more on outdoor lounge furniture as they spend more time at home. FOX Business' Grady Trimble with more.

Get all the latest news on coronavirus and more delivered daily to your inbox. Sign up here.

Even when the coronavirus was at its worst in the U.S., real estate and furniture companies remained open and operational as essential businesses. Despite the convenience of having these services available, consumers have been concerned about how they can keep themselves safe while they shop for these important purchases.

CORONAVIRUS HEALTH TIPS TO USE WHILE STATEWIDE SHUTDOWNS EASE

FOX Business spoke with two industry insiders to get their best COVID-19 shopping tips.

How to safely shop for a house?

Commercial real estate investor Marina Vaamonde has implemented COVID-19 safety measures while she has worked with clients in Houston, which can be helpful to any consumer who is looking to buy a new home during the pandemic.

"Don't make unnecessary pit stops with your real estate agent while you are looking at properties," Vaamonde told FOX Business. "If you plan on being out for a while, bring drinks and snacks along for the trip."

    ZILLOW RESUMES HOME-BUYING BUSINESS

She also advises consumers to wear personal protective equipment when viewing a home, which includes gloves and face coverings. Additionally, she recommends consumers take their shoes off at the door and try their best to not touch common surfaces.

As an alternative, virtual or self-led tours can be requested to minimize contact with other parties.

For high-rise properties, Vaamonde urges social distancing and capacity limits on elevator rides or opting for the stairs.

When it comes down to communicating with your real estate agent, Vaamonde says consumers should refrain from scheduling "unnecessary face-to-face meetings," and use messaging or video call services instead.

Methods like these can also be applied to a virtual closing.

WAYFAIR'S ONLINE FURNITURE SALES BOOSTED BY CORONAVIRUS SHUTDOWN

"You don't have to physically have to go to the title company to sign your closing or loan documents," she explained. "All documents can be sent to your home with an authorized mobile notary who will attest to your signature."

Vaamonde added, "Leave your pre-pandemic social etiquette behind. There is nothing wrong with keeping your distance and letting the individual around you know your boundaries. If someone is getting too close for your comfort, speak up."

How to safely shop for furniture?

Since states are in the early reopening stages and most major furniture companies haven't revealed in-store sanitation practices and are pushing curbside pickup or delivery instead, the safest bet is to shop online.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

Jon Cheney, the CEO and co-founder of SeekXR, an augmented reality and 3D viewing tech company, told FOX Business that furniture websites that "already have AR capabilities in place are better prepared as consumers are able to use their smartphones to view products and bring to life how they'll look in their home."

Brands like Overstock and Raymour and Flanigan are using SeekXR's technology to make online furniture shopping easier with true-to-size views. All consumers need to do is select an item they're interested in and check out how their selection looks and scales in their room by aiming their smartphone in a designated area, so "they can safely experience a product before they buy it."

Although augmented reality is helpful on the social distancing front, it doesn't quite replace the feeling of sitting down in a chair to check its comfort or putting weight on a table to check its sturdiness. However, looking up reviews on furniture websites may help you make an informed decision before you commit.

For curbside pickups and deliveries, hand hygiene and PPE should be a top priority to reduce the chance of infection.

The Best Outdoor Furniture to Transform Your Backyard or Balcony Into the Ultimate Summer Sanctuary

This year, the search for the best outdoor furniture has taken on a newfound importance. During a normal summer, a night out at a restaurant or a beach vacation were social staples. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, many of us will spend these warm-weather days at home. So sprucing up your space (whether it's a balcony, patio, rooftop, or backyard) is necessary for some fun in the sun—and, well, sanity.

Let's start with the most basic of basics: a place to sit. A slingback chair is perfect for those who need something simple. They're affordable and lightweight (therefore easy to shift six feet apart). Looking to make a more permanent investment? You can't go wrong with a classic Adirondack—or a sky blue, super-plushy cushioned lounge chair.

No summer night is complete without an al fresco meal, but you'll need the right dining set to make that happen. For urbanites, a bistro set is a chic and space-conscious choice. (Also, some advice: order in a pop of color, as it does wonders against concrete.) If you have an expansive lawn or patio and love to entertain, invest in a full dining set. Afterwards, please invite me over for a cocktail or two.

And don't forget the accessories: a wicker lantern, a bar cart, and a rotund fire pit (really).

Below, the 37 best pieces of outdoor furniture, whether you're a city-dweller, country-lover, modernist, or traditionalist.

    Chairs

From easy-to-move slingbacks to the cushy lounger you'll never want to get up from, here are the perfect seats to drink rosé in all summer.

    Couches

The outdoor couches you, your family, and (quarantine chosen) friends will love.

    Bistro Sets

Just the things for your next city cocktail hour, balcony tête-à-tête, or even outdoor office.

    Dining Sets

For the entertainer looking to make their poolside patio the place to be this summer.

    Accessories and Accents

After you order the basics, get something to add a bit of spark—perhaps literally, with a fire pit.

Outdoor furniture sales up as coronavirus cancels summer vacations keeping many at home

Overstock.com CEO Jonathan Johnson discusses the various products consumers have bought from the online retailer during the coronavirus outbreak.

After months of staying indoors, Americans are investing in their outdoor spaces.

Furniture retailers have seen a spike in outdoor home items like patio chairs, gardening tools, pool floats and grills with stay-at-home orders still in place in many states due to the coronavirus pandemic and what's looking like a stagnant summer for travel lovers.

More people are investing in outdoor furniture ahead of summer during the coronavirus pandemic.

Overstock.com saw patio furniture sales increase a whopping 225 percent year over year since April 1. Outdoor recreational items like pool and gardening items saw 360 percent year-over-year growth since April 1. The outdoor recreational item sales outpaced Overstock.com's top-selling category, office furniture, which saw 270 percent year-over-year growth during the same time period.

LUXE HOME OFFICE OPTIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC EXPAND TO BACKYARDS, LIVING ROOMS

    TickerSecurityLastChangeChange %OSTKOVERSTOCK COM15.19-1.89-11.04%BBBYBED BATH & BEYOND INC.6.28+0.49+8.46%

"The growth we've seen this year is larger than we have ever seen before.  People are finding that the more time they spend at home, the more time they want to have those things that make it more meaningful and, more beneficial,  and a functional and fashionable outdoor space is playing a big part of that," Ron Hilton, Overstock's chief sourcing and operations officer, told FOX Business in a statement.

And Bed Bath & Beyond in April had an 85 percent increase in its digital sales growth, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to FOX Business. The retailer's online outdoor furniture and patio business is up approximately 88 percent over the last four weeks.

While Hilton said sales for outdoor furniture items tend to heat up when the weather gets warm, the sales boom has been unusually high with more people sheltering in place as a result of COVID-19. And more people seem to have been shopping around the time the government issued Americans stimulus checks.

CORONAVIRUS QUARANTINE BOOSTS AT-HOME OFFICE FURNITURE SALES

The sales uptick in outdoor furnishings also comes as Americans seem to be filling their idle time with DIY home improvement projects like remodeling rooms, planting their own gardens or repainting. And while a slew of retailers has filed for bankruptcy due to COVID-19-related store closures, the home furniture market is seeing continued growth.

"People are viewing home as the place where they're going to be and home furnishings are no longer a discretionary purchase," Overstock.com CEO Jonathan Johnson told FOX Business' Liz Claman earlier this month.

On Thursday, La-Z-Boy brand ambassador Kristen Bell took to Instagram to announce the furniture company's new "One Million Thanks" campaign. Created to honor health care workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic, the campaign is encouraging the online community to create a million different ways to say "thank you" to health care workers. Anyone can join and help create a show of support for frontline medical workers by tagging #OneMillionThanks.

Considering that Jay Dillon is expanding his outdoor furniture business in the middle of a global pandemic, things are going well.

Dillon's company, Yardbird, which uses repurposed plastic debris from the ocean to make the furniture, had been planning to expand from its base in Minneapolis to Denver, Kansas City and Detroit. The novel coronavirus then broke out in China and other Asian countries where the company gets about 55% of its products.

As the disease spread around the world, Yardbird went from scrambling to get its goods from overseas to the prospect of having the products but little demand for them after U.S. businesses started closing.

"It's nothing that we obviously chose to do," Dillon said of growing the company during a pandemic.

"It felt like a roller coaster ride, at one point pushing to get the product and then saying 'No, don't get product, hold up on product,' " he added. "Ultimately it was this up, down and then up again. It's been chaotic. It's been chaotic for everybody."

It's also been surprisingly rewarding for Yardbird as economic activity has started to pick up. The company opened its first Colorado location last week in Lone Tree when retail stores were allowed to reopen while following guidelines to keep COVID-19 from spreading. Dillon said the Lone Tree showroom did about $250,000 in business. The company's sales, primarily online, totaled roughly $2 million over the past two weeks.

"We were aiming to do about half of that (in sale) in a normal environment," said Dillon.

He figures the timing has been serendipitous for Yardbird. Restrictions on business are easing at about the same time the weather's getting warmer and the backyard beckons as a safe place to venture.

"As the weather becomes nice and people can't go out to events, if they haven't been impacted that much financially, we're seeing that they're investing in their outdoor space to entertain close friends or their families, just to be outdoors," Dillon said. "In that regard, we feel very grateful, very fortunate. We're just glad we don't sell men's dress pants since people aren't going into work."

Dillon and his father, Bob, launched Yardbird in 2017. The elder Dillon has experience in importing and retail. The son worked in marketing and for a medical devices company.

It was Dillon's personal experience of shopping for outdoor furniture that led to starting Yardbird. He saw an opening for a product that wasn't as expensive as that sold by high-end retailers but of higher quality than some of the lower-priced furniture.

Dillon, who lived for a while in Hong Kong, visited factories in Asia and learned more about how other companies use plastic that winds up in the ocean. He said large nets are used to collect plastic and other garbage on the beaches in Hong Kong, "but you're still swimming in a ton of debris."

"About 60% of everything we sell has intercepted ocean plastic in it. An average set will have at least 20 to 30 pounds of that plastic in it," Dillon said.

Yardbird works with businesses in China and other countries to produce strong plastic whose colors won't easily fade. The company gets about 10% of its products from Europe and 30-35% from the U.S., including a supplier in Durango.

The supply-chain challenges caused by the coronavirus outbreak has Yardbird exploring more domestic sources of material, including aluminum. The company is going to manufacture a new line of Adirondack chairs.

However, Dillon thinks some products from other countries would be hard to replace, such as hand-woven wicker furniture.

Yardbird opened a showroom in Kansas City Monday, but has pushed back an opening in Detroit, which has been a hot spot for the coronavirus.

Some Art Van Furniture stores could reopen under a new name

A private-equity firm in Texas is poised to buy 17 Michigan locations of shuttered and bankrupt Art Van Furniture and may reopen the stores under a new name and rehire some of their laid-off employees.

A U.S. bankruptcy judge late last week approved the $6.9-million deal, which includes 10 additional Art Van and Levin and Wolf furniture locations outside Michigan. The sale is expected to close sometime this week and, altogether, involves the purchase of inventory and assets for 27 leased store locations in six states, according to court documents.

The deal doesn't include those stores' real estate, most of which was sold off in 2017 as part of the Van Elslander family's $612.5 million sale of their metro Detroit-based furniture company to private-equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners of Boston.

Several stores in the deal are located in such metro Detroit cities as Warren, Livonia, Royal Oak and Taylor, among others.

The new prospective buyer is a limited liability company controlled by Dallas-based private-equity firm US Assets Inc. US Assets was started in 2014 by a Texan named John Love "with the purpose of purchasing existing companies by providing fresh capital, increased liquidity and monetization of existing assets," according to the company's website.

Court documents say the company could rehire employees for the 27 locations. The locations represent about 20% of the store footprint for Art Van and its Levin and Wolf furniture stores.

The US Assets Facebook page says it is preparing to open a new business called Loves Furniture. The announcement, first reported by trade journal Furniture Today, doesn't say whether Loves Furniture will be a rebranding of former Art Van stores.

More: Art Van Furniture to close its stores, begin liquidation sales

The company did not respond Monday to a message seeking comment. Art Van's court-appointed bankruptcy trustee also didn't respond to comment requests.

US Assets' website says it typically invests in lower- and middle-market businesses with between $5 million and $50 million in pre-tax earnings. It reports an eclectic mix of portfolio companies, including a chain of urgent care centers, a large dirt biking and off-roading park in Texas, the Penguin Point chicken and burger chain in Indiana and an Arizona dog grooming and boarding business.

Art Van Furniture filed for Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy on March 9 and the case later converted into a Chapter 7 liquidation. All of its 169 locations in multiple states closed, and about 1,000 Michigan employees were laid off.

Art Van stopped its liquidation sales the weekend of March 21 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, numerous customers have made complaints online and to the Free Press about having paid for merchandise during the going-out-of-business sales, but never receiving it.

Excluded from the pending sale is any furniture inside the stores that Art Van sold to customers during its going-out-of-business sale. It was unclear Monday whether any effort would be made to allow the customers to retrieve the merchandise.

Crain's Detroit reported in March that Gary Van Elslander, a son of Art Van founder Archie Van Elslander, had submitted a bid to the bankruptcy court for the Art Van brand name and trademark. A representative for the Van Elsander family did not return a message Monday regarding the status of that bid.

The 17 Michigan locations in the pending sale are:

  • Taylor store
  • Royal Oak store
  • 8 Mile location in Warren
  • Livonia store
  • Waterford Store
  • Saginaw store
  • Burton store
  • Bay City store
  • Portage store
  • Shelby Township store
  • Westland store
  • Ann Arbor store
  • Port Huron store
  • Howell store
  • Muskegon store
  • Battle Creek
  • Petoskey store
  • The other 10 Art Van or Levin and Wolf locations are in:

  • Schaumburg, Illinois
  • Woodward, Illinois
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • McMurray, Pennsylvania
  • Pittsburgh
  • Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
  • Altoona, Pennsylvania
  • Leesburg, Virginia
  • Mr. Pleasant, Pennsylvania
  • Towson, Maryland

Eight Furniture Highlights From One Of Europe’s Most Respected Design Galleries

The ultimate talent scout, Rossana Orlandi, has run one of Europe's most important design galleries for the past 18 years. Known as Spazio Rossana Orlandi, it is here in this former tie factory in Milan where the magic operates. Always ready to take a chance on new talents, Orlandi has an eye for spotting promising young designers, having taken a risk on the likes of Piet Hein Eek, Maarten Baas and Nacho Carbonell before they became famous, helping to propel them onto the world stage. The greats such as Piero Lissoni, Alessandro Mendini, Paola Navone, Patricia Urquiola, Gaetano Pesce and Nendo have also exhibited in her gallery. Somewhat of a godmother of Italian design, she treats her protégés as her own children and needs to have an immediate personal connection with the designers she works with. If she likes the work but not the person, she won't start. We take a look at some of the most exciting products that have passed through the doors of her gallery.

    Mandalaki Halo Lamp

Employing the least amount of materials possible, the super-skinny floor lamp features a dichroic filter designed and manufactured by the Milan-based studio that divides the pure luminous flux of the LED into an infinite spectrum of colors.

The sculptural, serene range of chairs, benches, sofas, tables and lighting with names stemming from Greek mythology by Ini Archibong comes in various celestial hues and reveals the tension between delicacy and strength.

    Guglielmo Poletti Equilibrium Table

Continuing the Equilibrium series emphasizing tension to turn minimal gestures into balanced designs, it has a monolithic presence with weighted cylindrical legs in contrast to an ultrathin 6-mm top that tests the limits of aluminum, whose strength is guaranteed by a stainless steel cable and expanding central bar.

    Ecopixel Alex Chaise Longue

Designed by the late Alessandro Mendini, the daybed with geometrical, folded forms transforms 100 % recycled and recyclable polyethylene into a work of pointillism through a multi-colored pixel-based approach and an innovative pressurized production technique.

Reflective and glistening, it shimmers in the light, showing a palette of colors merging into one another as when day turns into night.

    Mete Lala Chair

Refined and minimal, the chair by Nika Zupanc is offered in a variety of colors and is influenced by the basic lines of a simple school chair, now modified with a metal structure to frame the upholstered seat and backrest.

    Matthew McCormick Mila Chandelier

Experimental and poetic, the pendant is a study of balance between two pure and simple volumes with a hand-blown glass orb sitting at the base of an oval metal frame with entirely invisible technology. Available in varying lengths, it may be suspended individually or as a group.

    Enrico Marone Cinzano Pino Table

For indoor or outdoor use, it is handcrafted in marble, glass, steel and charred, stabilized recovered pine wood. The top covered in solar panels printed with a wood slice motif powers a battery that can supply energy to the table's LED lights or to one's gadgets via a built-in multi-zone plug and USB ports.

This Platform’s April Furniture Sales Beat Black Friday Numbers—By a Lot

For furniture retailers, the widespread shutdowns caused by COVID-19 had initially proven disastrous. The first weeks of the pandemic saw the category suffer steep, double-digit declines as the ability to browse offline disappeared. But business didn't dry up entirely, as some of that displaced demand shifted online.

Now, new April data shows just how quickly shopping for furniture online has become the new normal. According to a press release from home furnishings–focused e-commerce platform Blueport Commerce, furniture retailers on the platform (which includes members of the Furniture Today Top 100) saw their online sales increase by an average of 306% over April 2019. In fact, total sales across the platform were 81% greater than what was observed last November, a busy sales period for the furniture industry which included Black Friday, but not Cyber Monday, in 2019.

Just as total sales increased in April, so did the average order size for furniture retailers. The value of the average sale across the platform increased by 27% to $1,210. Top-selling categories included sofas, living room sets, and dining sets. That suggests these sales bumps weren't simply the result of customers rushing to furnish their new home offices, but a potentially more sustainable shift. Based on the evidence, it would seem that some furniture retailers have had enough time to adapt their sales and marketing strategies to fit a new, fully-online world.

"Turning to digital channels to reach their shoppers, furniture retailers amped up digital marketing and their social media presence," Blueport founder and CEO Carl Prindle tells AD PRO. "They deployed chat and video conferencing technologies to enable their salespeople to consult with shoppers. They also used their in-house delivery capabilities to tune delivery methods, ensuring safe deliveries and putting shoppers at ease."

Subsequently, a number of retailers generated enough online sales to keep pace with or at least close the gap on their pre-pandemic projections. "Retailers generated a meaningful portion of the brick-and-mortar revenue they had anticipated for April, despite all of their stores being closed," Prindle says. "Some retailers actually grew total sales relative to last April, when they had their stores open."

The data here is only a small snapshot of what's happening in the retail sector, and furniture retailers would obviously prefer to return to a world where they can also make sales in stores. But as brands have augmented their sales efforts and customers have adjusted their expectations, there's reason to believe that the furniture industry may make it through the pandemic more or less intact.

"We had actually planned on partnering with them before COVID started and we were going to do an in-store event to sign up and get their swab on the spot," explained Randilynn. "But right now people aren't coming into stores and sticking swabs in their mouths. But we can still do something."

They moved the campaign to social media and are getting a great response.

In terms of their business, Randilynn and Jason are doing virtual shopping trips for customers. They refer to them as "pre-purchase appointments" acknowledging how important it is to see, and sit on furniture, in person before making a purchase. Which is something that just isn't possible right now.
